Since 1963, Richard Smerdon has worked
continuously in professional and college theatres as a production technician,
manager and designer. He began his professional career as a stage technician in
London’s West End and came to Canada in 1973 to serve as Technical Director of
the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. Through his work on a complete range of
historic and contemporary theatres, he has earned a sterling reputation for
creative and practical design solutions.
In 1985, Mr. Smerdon founded the Theatre Consulting Group Limited, which
provides planning, design and consulting services to the entertainment industry
and organizations involved in the construction of theatres, studios and
exhibition facilities. The company works on a group basis, assembling teams of
specialists to respond to the particular requirements of a project. As the
principal, Mr. Smerdon is responsible for coordination, the presentation of
design drawings and specifications and the development of cost estimates and
budgets. The Theatre Consulting Group offers a wide range of services, including
feasibility studies, project analysis, preliminary budgeting, design and
specification of theatre equipment, design of special equipment (such as stage
elevators and hoists, motorized winch systems and fire protection curtains), and
the design and production of industrial presentations.
Mr. Smerdon's projects have included: The White Pines Auditorium in Sault Ste.
Marie, Ontario; the Capital Theatre in Windsor, Ontario; the Showplace Theatre
in Peterborough, Ontario; the National Library and Archives Auditorium in
Ottawa; the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia; the Capitol Theatre in
Moncton, New Brunswick; and the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres, and the
Princess of Wales Theatre, the Jane Mallet Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre,
the Hummingbird (formerly the O'Keefe) Centre, the Ettore Mazzeloni Concert Hall
at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Isabel Bader Theatre -- all in
Toronto.
