Peter J. Smith of Peter Smith Architect Inc. (formerly the Toronto office of Lett/Smith Architects) is one of Canada's most respected theatre architects. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Prior to the formation of Lett/Smith Architects in 1973, Mr. Smith was a senior partner in the Thom Partnership, Architects and Planners. During the ten years he was a part of that organization, he was responsible for a wide variety of projects including the Master Plan and development of the activity areas at Expo '67, the Bata Library at Trent University, the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo, and the Shaw Festival Theatre at Niagara-on-the-Lake.
As a partner of Lett/Smith for thirty years, Mr. Smith was responsible for the design of all of the firm’s performing arts projects as well as facilities for the visual arts. His theatres include: the Princess of Wales Theatre, the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, the du Maurier Theatre Centre and the Isabel Bader Theatre (all in Toronto); Theatre Aquarius (Hamilton), Showplace Community Theatre (Peterborough), North Bay Arts Centre (North Bay), Huron Country Playhouse (Grand Bend) and the Orillia Opera House (Orillia).
Mr. Smith has received numerous awards for his work, including: the Governor General's Medal for the renovation/reconstruction of the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario; the Toronto Arts Award for Design and Architecture; the City of Toronto Architecture and Urban Design Award and the Ontario Association of Architects Award for Architectural Excellence -- both for the Isabel Bader Theatre at the University of Toronto.
