CATHERINE SMALLEY

  Toronto, ON

After graduating with honours from the University of Guelph, Catherine Smalley began a distinguished career in association management: founding Executive Director of the Toronto Theatre Alliance (1979-82), Executive Director of Theatre Ontario (1984-87), and Executive Director of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (1987-92). In each of these positions she worked successfully with very diverse groups of organizations and individuals, in order to respond to complex issues of needs and resources, professional development, advocacy, and labour relations.

From 1992-1996 she was the General Manager of Young People's Theatre (now known as the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People). It is the largest professional theatre for young audiences in Canada, with an annual operating budget of $3 million, and is housed in a renovated historic facility in Toronto.

Since leaving the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre in 1996, Ms. Smalley has been a freelance project manager for a wide variety of clients. To every project she brings her experience in planning and program development, human resource issues, advocacy, and community consultation. Her years of association management give her particular expertise with collaborative programs and projects.

Ms. Smalley is currently the Arts Program Coordinator of the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation.
